About Janet

Paragliding in Cape Town

Welcome to Journalist On the Run, my adventure travel blog that follows my escapades around the world and tries to give readers an insight into what life is like in far flung corners of this beautiful planet.

I’m a 29 year old, happy-go-lucky intrepid traveler (and qualified journalist!) from Ireland, who decided to quit her full time job in favour of a happier, healthier and more adventurous life.

When I was younger, I can remember reading an inspirational story in a book called “Chicken Soup for the Soul”.  The short story titled Another Check Mark On the List is about a 15-year-old boy named John who, on one rainy day, when it was too wet outside to play, decided to write a list of goals. John continued writing until he had 127 goals. These goals included exploring the Nile River, climbing the world’s highest mountains, read the entire works of Shakespeare and learning 3 foreign languages. He also wanted to milk a poisonous snake and ride an ostrich!

Of the 127 goals that he listed over 60 years ago, John has achieved 108. If he lives to become 75 years old he will achieve 109 (he listed “live to see the 21st Century”). How did John achieve all of these goals? He wrote them down.

After reading this story, I too decided, like many other people, to make a list of all the things I wanted to do/see/learn throughout my life. I, however, wanted to achieve these things before the age of 30. Back then 30 seemed to be quite old and an acceptable age to have completed all my goals. Now that 30 is fast-approaching, and I look back on everything I have achieved in such a short space of time, I have decided to set bigger goals!!

This blog is about documenting all my travels and adventures, my career growth and career failure, and keeping track of all the goals I have achieved and the many more which have yet to be accomplished. It’s sort of like a ‘bucket list for life’.

Right now, following stints living in Asia, I am roaming the world as a digital nomad, working from my computer and pretty much living the dream.

Learning loads, smiling loads, making loads more amazing friends. I see life as one big adventure, so come join me and let’s have some fun!

Okay, so its just random luck that i locked on to journlist janet. Do these things go away? Granted, she is a wealth of knowledge of what it is like to be travelling around the world on a stipend visa with hotels and yachts gallore, but what i am really interested in is where the cheapest place to sleep is and how increibly drunk we can get out of five of whatever currency we’re in. And before you say shit, i spent the last three yeare of my life ensuring rural west AFRICAN communities had the resources and commodities to survive day to day.

      • March 5, 2013 / 10:56 am

Hey Jason….Are you asking me a question or simply making a statement?! That’s great that you spent the last 3 years working with west African communities, very admirable. I hope that some day soon I can spend that much time in Africa, but have to save up first so I have enough money to survive with little or no pay. :)

Fun to read of your adventures. Have you read “The Tales of a Female Nomad?” It inspired me years ago to walk away from my golden handcuffs of corporate American and start a new life. I am in central Brazil…look me up if you decide to explore Latin America. I love Brazil and have lived here as a volunteer for nine years. Hugs, pat

Once I graduate from this Masters I’m hoping the job I land will let me visit and live in many different countries, I’ll be sure to look you up if I ever make it to Brazil! Janet

  19. December 30, 2011 / 5:15 am

I’m incredibly jealous of your travels! I have no clue how you afford it, lol! I am working very hard to find a way to get back to travel, because it is my passion. I have many stories to tell of the places I have been, but there are so many more I want to see! I got my TEFL so that I could teach English, but without a university degree I am limited. I keep thinking about taking a Journalism course online or something. I have an insane passion for travel and will continue to search for a way to become more portable so that I may continue to explore and share my journeys with others. I had some amazing experiences meeting couchsurfers as well! I also realize that hostels have such a bad name in the States, but they truly are a travelers gem! Please continue to write… it is inspiring.

      January 6, 2012 / 3:59 am

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Travel really is one of my big passions too! I hope you get to go use your TEFL somewhere, teaching English really is such fun!

      January 6, 2012 / 5:15 pm

I mean you easily stay out of trouble, but what fun would that be? I seem to always get myself into dangerous situations, but only dangerous by western standards. In Africa..it’s just everyday life and seriously exciting! You should deffo take an adventure there…if it’s your first trip go easy on yourself and check out Kenya, South Africa or Uganda…then when you’re feeling braver you can go a little further! :) Also you’re a couchsurfer too?? Awesome! When were you in Dublin?

I just read your flash mob post. It looks like you had a great time. Very well written. It caught my attention and held it.

Will you ever work in journalism? You have a nice voice and a good way with words.

Good luck with your journeys. It looks like you are more of a travel than a destination.

I was wondering where you taught and traveled to in Kenya and where you went to boarding school and what years you were in Kenya.

Hello! Sorry for RIDICULOUS delay in getting back to you…only seeing this comment now!! I taught in St Kevins Secondary School in Lodwar, in the Turkana province of Northern Kenya. We travelled mostly on the coast and in the Turkana Region, but also a few stops in Western Kenya by Lake Victoria. I went to boarding school in Bandon, in Co.Cork, Ireland! :) Oh and I was in Kenya Summer 2006, Summer 2007 and November 2012.

Hello! I work, work, work!! I mostly work my way around the world, getting a job for 1 year in 1 country then moving on to the next. I stay in cheap places when traveling and eat like the locals. :) Hope that helps!

Hey Janet! Wonderful Blog you have here. I love travelling as much as you do. You’ve been to Bhutan? Planning a roadtrip there this summer. Any inputs will be awesome. Keep doing the good job!!

Wow, Janet. You’re living the sort of life I want. But just how does one go about it? I fear not having enough money, steady income. If I could work out some arrangement, whether through freelance or a book deal, sure, that would help make it happen for me. I do get to travel some, now and then, and I’m always writing so that’s good for now. Will continue to read your blog and keep getting inspired.

You know what, Janet – of all the Chicken Soup stories I’ve read, I vividly remember (and sometimes think about) THIS particular story you mentioned! I remember feeling so inspired when I first read that story. I have a bucket list of 87 items as well, and although I hear some comments about how experiences shouldn’t be “do it and tick off”, I cherish the items on my list because they keep me motivated, inspired and excited. :) I’m sure you feel the same. I’m happy to have stumbled across your blog, and would be following your adventures. :)

So it July 11, 2016 and I see now writing since September of 2013. I’m wondering where Janet is and what is her latest adventure… At 54 I would love to pack it into a sack and walk off into the Irish sunset….
I am grateful that such freedom still exists in this crazy world.
