Group Adventure Trip To Sri Lanka: February 2019 // LIMITED SPOTS
Following 4 incredible trips to Sri Lanka, known as the teardrop of Asia and probably THE best adventure and wildlife destination on the continent, I’ve decided to organize a group adventure trip to Sri Lanka at the end of February so I can take 12 of you fine folk with me!
2019 will be the 10 YEAR celebration of my blog, Journalist On The Run, and what better way to celebrate a decade of blogging and almost 100 countries visited, then finally bringing my readers with me on an adventure.
I’ve been carefully crafting the best itinerary possible, learning from all my past mistakes, and trying to create an adventurous tour that also involves elements of relaxation, interacting with locals and trying my favourite local Sri Lankan food and wildlife encounters as well as a few luxury hotel experiences. I have been using a very well known local tour partner to help make this incredible tour itinerary and to help me pick the best places to stay while sticking to a *fairly* strict budget.
There will only be 12 spots available on the tour but if it’s a success I promise to run a second tour to Sri Lanka later in the year. Keeping it to a small group size so we can all get to know each other, things will be less complicated and it will be easier to organize epic adventures with fewer people to round up!
Below is the itinerary we will be following, however, a small few elements might change and the tour company and I are still choosing a few of the best places to stay, so that will be confirmed at a later stage. What I can promise is that we will be staying in 3 or 4 star hotels, most of which will have a swimming pool, many will have epic views and when down south we will have direct beach access!
Day 1: Arrival in Colombo / Transfer to Negombo / Beach time
On day 1 the group will fly in from their home countries, will be picked up at the airport and brought to a beach property in Negombo, a beach resort north of Sri Lanka’s capital. Time to relax, have a drink by the pool and prepare for the adventure!
Day 2: Dambulla Temple / Climb Sigiriya Fortress
On day 2, we will depart Negombo at 9am and drive in our air-conditioned minibus for 2 – 3 hours to get to Dambulla. Here we will visit the famous Dambulla Cave Temple and Golden Buddha site, one of the most important religious and historical sites in Sri Lanka.
We’ll eat a delicious local lunch before traveling to our 4-star hotel, located in lush surrounds, with an impressive infinity pool. Once the hottest time of the day has passed, we will travel for 30 minutes to Sigiriya to climb to the top of Sigiriya Fortress for sunset – one of the most iconic historic sites in Sri Lanka.
After sunset, we will return to our hotel for a buffet dinner outside on the deck and have an early night.
Day 3: Climb Pidurangala and Minneriya Elephant Safari
Day 3 will be an early start, climbing the sacred Pidurangala Rock for sunrise. This mountain is situated opposite Sigiriya and affords the best views of the fortress and surrounding countryside. The climb up and down only takes 1 hour. Return to the hotel for a well-earned breakfast and a nap by the pool.
In the afternoon, we will be doing a 2 – 3 hour elephant safari in Minneriya National Park, home to over 200 wild elephants. It’s best to go in the late afternoon when many of the elephant herds travel down to the lake to wash.
Lunch and dinner provided at local restaurants or in hotel. TBC.
Day 4: Travel to Nuwara Eliya / Ramboda Waterfall / Tea Plantation
On day 4, we will travel towards Nuwara Eliya after breakfast – the top tea producing region in Sri Lanka. The journey takes 3 to 4 hours, but we will stop at some interesting sites along the way including an ancient Hindu Temple and Ramboda Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country.
On arrival in Nuwara Eliya, we will have lunch in a famous tea plantation and try some delicious Sri Lankan teas. There will be free time to wander around the town, which has a lot of old Colonial architecture and pretty buildings to photograph.
Dinner either at the hotel or a local restaurant included.
Day 5: Visit waterfalls / Train to Ella
Early start to check out some of the famous waterfalls in the Nuwara Eliya Region, including the beautiful Lovers Leap Falls and viewpoint. The group will be catching the 11am train to Ella, a famous train ride the travels through the tea plantations and mountains as is slowly winds its way to Ella. The bus will take all your baggage so all you need is your camera and a little money.
Check into hotel in Ella and have some downtime to have lunch and relax before climbing Little Adams Peak or Ella Hill for sunset. Also the chance to walk to the famous Nine Arch Bridge outside of Ella to take photos.
Dinner in Ella town, a backpacker hotspot.
Day 6: Ella waterfalls, hiking, and cooking class
Day 6 will be spent exploring Ella, home to the highest and second highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and with plenty of lookout points, tea plantations and mountains to climb for epic views. Depending on weather, and how strong currents are, it’s possible to swim at the top or the base of some of the waterfalls. Lunch at a local restaurant near one of the waterfalls.
For dinner, we will be doing a Sri Lankan cooking class and eating whatever we cook!
Day 7: Drive to Unawatuna, beach time
Day 7 is a long 4 hour drive to the beach, so we will leave as early as possible so we have more beach time. We will stop to have lunch along the way, or have it when we arrive and the afternoon will be free time. No organized dinner tonight – lots of nice beachside huts, bars and restaurants to choose from.
Day 8: Whale watching, Galle sunset tour
Early start (6am!!) to go whale watching and hopefully spot some dolphins and maybe even a Blue Whale! The trip usually lasts for 3 – 4 hours. Snacks provided for breakfast.
We will have some down time until about 4pm, when we will go to Galle and have free time to explore the UNESCO city, do some shopping and then have sunset drinks and dinner inside the old town.
Day 9: Airport transfer / Fly home
Depending on flight times, airport transfers will be organized or you can travel to Colombo if you wish to extend your stay and check out the capital.
