7 Reasons To Fly Wow Air To Iceland

WOW AirlinesWe have all been there. Stuck in the middle on a jam-packed Ryanair flight, surrounded by crying babies and rowdy stag parties on an over-heated flight to Berlin. We all love cheap flights, and despite uncomfortable conditions and endless complaining, we will continue to book said flights thanks to their rock bottom prices.

I never thought that I could have a truly enjoyable flight experience on a budget airline until I flew to Iceland with Wow Air last week. I’ve had good flights with Ryanair too, ones that landed on time or weren’t total disasters, but I doubt I could ever call any of them enjoyable!

So, what makes Wow Air so special? Apart from flying you to beautiful Iceland, they also, promise to deliver the WOW feeling and they don’t disappoint! Here’s my quick review of Wow Air and 7 reasons they made me smile!

PRO TIP: If you’re planning to travel to the Iceland, be it on a budget or on a luxury tour, I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to have decent travel insurance – especially as medical care can be SO expensive here. I always use World Nomads, as they’re known as the best insurer for backpackers and long term travellers.

7. Their planes have the most epic names.

The very first plane to be released by Wow Air was the Wow Force One! While our plane wasn’t quite so cool, it was very pretty to look at and made us excited to be flying with them!

6. They have you smiling even before you board

The boarding cards have ‘Bon Wowage’ splashed across the front, the plane itself reminds you that you are off to Iceland, one of the most beautiful countries on earth, and as you climb the steps it says, “Smile if yuo cna raed tihs”, which of course makes everyone smile just as they enter the plane.

5. Personalized messages wherever you look

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference. I really loved the Wow Air head rest covers that all have cute little messages like “Hi, I am your seat” or “Greetings traveler”. The seats were also really spacious, and considering I’m 5’10 (177 cm) I did not feel cramped at all. There were also funny signs to be spotted everywhere you looked such as the “Honk if you’re hungry” signs next to the call buttons.

4. Best sick bag…ever!

On our flight from Dublin to Reykjavik, my friend Lauren was the first to discover Wow Air’s ingenious sick bag in the seat pocket. We couldn’t stop laughing and nodding our heads at all the stages of their ‘Vomit-Meter’. Classic.

3. Purple everywhere you look

This might be personal, but is the colour purple not the happiest colour in the world? How can you now smile when you see all the staff, and even the interior of the plane, decked out in royal colours?!

2. Even the pilots are super friendly

On arrival in Reykjavik we asked the air hostel to radio through to the pilots of we could capture a quick ‘pilot selfie’! The pilots were so friendly when I explained I was a travel blogger and invited Lauren and myself to take the hot seats for the most amazing cockpit photo ever. We were simply warned to mind out heads and not to touch any buttons. ;-)

1.This is the owner. Ahem.

Ahem. Hotness.

Booking details: WOW air, Iceland’s low-cost airline, operate the only direct scheduled service between Ireland and Iceland with flights between Dublin to Reykjavik from €69 one way including taxes and charges. They fly three times weekly on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, until 22 October. Flights will operate twice weekly on Monday and Friday from 26 October. Visit www.wowair.ie to book!

Word of warning: One thing to keep in mind is that unlike other budget airlines, Wow Air only allows you to take 7kg of hand luggage (compared to the usual 10kg) and they will weigh your bag upon check in so make sure you have not over packed or you will be made to check in your bag and pay a fee!

Editors note: Wow Air very kindly sponsored my flights to Iceland last September and in return I said I would write about them in my Iceland blog post. It turned out that my experience was so fun, however, that I decided to dedicate a whole post just for them!

I flew a couple of years ago from Chicago, the flight was pretty nice, except when you got to Keflavik airport, to get of on a the termac was horrid I had my daughter who is disabled an no one from the airline offered to help. Not very professional? Do you think?
