This is just a super quick post to fill you all in on something awesome that just happened…an article a wrote about Groningen, a city in the very North of the Netherlands, just got published in National Geographic Intelligent Travel magazine. As you can imagine, I’m totally overwhelmed and unbelievably happy!
It has been a life goal of mine to get published in National Geographic and I am still in shock that I have actually achieved that goal. At the start of the year, I made the decision to revamp my travel blog and to start working towards becoming a full time travel blogger. I started writing for The Huffington Post and Matador Network, and my articles have been published in a wide range of other travel and tech websites from the Dublin Globe to Medium. But if you had asked me in January if I thought I would be published in National Geographic before the end of the year, I would have told you you were raving mad.
So how did this happen? Well, the craziest thing is that THEY NEVER TOLD ME! I was literally googling my name (guilty as charged) looking for an article I wrote about Instagram for another site when I came across the article which had been published on the Nat Geo site yesterday. I was literally speechless for a few seconds then a huge smile spread across my face into a grin and I literally could not stop smiling all afternoon.
I had written and submitted the article over 6 weeks ago but never heard back so presumed it wasn’t good enough, which would have been quite acceptable. Just goes to show…be patient with editors and publishers, if they like your work they will publish it in due time. The article is part of the ‘I Heart My City’ series, and if you can think of a city which they have NOT written about, and would like to get published in National Geographic, then you can check it out and apply here.
Next goal for me? Condé Nast Traveller all the way!
