This stunning video of the Sherkin Island Regatta in West Cork (one of the most South Westerly points of Ireland) makes me want to jump in a bus / car / plane and head down to West Cork RIGHT NOW.
Seriously, have you seen he colour of the water? The boats? Sherkin Island? That view? If this is how beautiful Sherkin looks on the busiest day of the year, can you imagine how nice it is on quieter days when it feels like you’re the only person in the world?!
Bit of background for you, in case you have no clue what or where Sherkin Island is: Sherkin Island, historically called Inisherkin, lies southwest of County Cork alongside other islands of Roaringwater Bay. It had a population of 106 people at the time of the 2006 Census, and measures 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide . The island has a primary school, a pub, a hotel, a bed and breakfast, a community centre and a church. Sure what else could you possible need?!
Sherkin is the second most southerly point of Ireland after Cape Clear, something that helps make its climate magically tropical! It is said that when the frost covers the lawns of Baltimore just across the bay, the grass remains unfrosted on the island. In my experience, Sherkin experiences more sunshine that anywhere else in Ireland. It’s literally a 3 mile long sun trap!
After watching this video anyone will quickly realize that Ireland really is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
I actually blogged about how much I love this part of the Ireland a few months ago, reminiscing about summers spent in Baltimore and jumping off the pier on Sherkin Island as my Dad taught me how to swim! You can read that post here if you want to see more lovely images of West Cork.
For more incredible videos and photos that showcase this part of the country, I recommend you check out the Best Photos of Baltimore Facebook page. It’s run by a local, updated daily and will fill you with wanderlust, (Achievable wanderlust if you’re based in Ireland!)
