The Rise of the Irish Language

Gaeltacht-Sign

I want to share some amazing videos with you created by young students currently attending Colaiste Lurgan Irish College in the West of Ireland. This college has been releasing music videos throughout the summer in which the students have translated recent and popular songs into Irish and have added their own twist to the songs. From singing Avicii ‘Wake me Up’ to  recreating the infamous cups scene from the movie ‘Pitch Perfect’, they are creating hit after hit. WIth their most recent video attracting more than half a million hits in 3 days, it is well on the way to becoming a viral sensation!

Not only am I amazed by the huge musical talent coming out of this Irish camp, but I’m also unbelievably impressed with the camp organizers for coming up with such a unique and creative method of making Irish fun to learn. When I was in secondary school I would have done anything to avoid going to Irish college, and while I know some of my friends did admit to having fun there, many more feared the place where English was strictly forbidden and ‘having fun’ was far from the priority of the teachers, supervisors and Bean an Tí’s!

Watching these videos you can see how much the students are ENJOYING learning Irish, and they remind me what a beautiful language it is. In addition to learning off the lyrics and singing songs in Irish, the organizers also recreated the Indian ‘Holi’ Festival of Colours on a local beach for the students to enjoy, an idea which is sure to encourage many more students to sign up to Irish college next year.

What do you think??

I love this! A wonderful idea in today’s globalization. Now is there a difference between the ‘Irish’ language and the Gaelic we heard in the Aran Islands? Are the the same thing?

Well now I feel silly. I have been told it is a tricky language to learn. Ijust loved the Aran Islands. We visited two of the three during our week. while lodging in Counties Galway and Clare. I loved the beauty, the history, stories and folklore. Dun Aengus was beyond spectacular and the fact you could go right up to the edge of the cliff was amazing. I am hoping to go back again when our kids are older.

I agree, I think that one is my favorite. The girls voice is so beautiful and it’s pretty amazing that all 600 students are so coordinated! I’m thinking of teaching it to my Korean students here! :)
