Last week I had the pleasure of staying in one of Lisbon’s newest (and coolest) hotels, the AVANI Avenida Liberdade. As I am already a big fan of colourful Lisbon and am always singing the city’s praise, I wasn’t sure if staying in a new hotel could add to my love for the city. How wrong I was.
It turns out that the AVANI Avenida Liberdade combines a few of my favourite things in life (sunset views and good food!) to create a memorable stay in Lisbon.
As Portugal is currently experiencing a heatwave, it is with both relief and excitement that I fell on to the bed welcoming the cold air blowing down on me from the air con. Once I had recovered from the heat I headed up to the Sky Bar for some drinks.
While the Sky Bar is actually located on the roof of the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, a partner hotel, it is open to AVANI guests and the public too. There are many beautiful sunset spots in Lisbon, and as the city of a million hills it’s not difficult to find a unique viewpoint, but nothing beats panoramic views of the city as far as the ocean than the Sky Bar on Avenida Liberdade!
I met with some fellow journalist and bloggers and we enjoyed some Portuguese wine and some perfectly mixed Gin and Tonics and waited for the sun to set. Besides the view, the bar was colourful had a brilliant atmosphere and there was even a DJ on hand to ensure the right tunes were being played throughout the evening.
My friend and I headed down to Oliveir’s restaurant for dinner, a meal that was one of the most unique and surprising dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. Most definitely not your average hotel restaurant, Oliveir’s is run by acclaimed Lisbon-born Chef Oliveir De Costa. Chef Oliveir has a chain of popular restaurants around Lisbon, loved by tourists, locals and celebrities alike.
My friend Johann and I decided to be adventurous and let the waitress pick from the menu, which resulted in a spread I could only have dreamed about.
From the thinly sliced melon and parma ham accompanied with fresh raspberries for a starter to the Brazilian beef main course and a dessert that tasted like Kinder Bueno – it’s safe to say we were not disappointed! Add to the mix a delicious Moscow Mule and some Rose wine and you have the complete package of a meal made in heaven.
We were also in great company, as the chatty Irish I am could not resist chatting to the couple next to us only to discover it was famous Portuguese actress and model Rita Pereira and her boyfriend. We chatted about travelling, food and of course how much we all love Oliveir’s!
The following morning early and sat out on my private balcony to watch the sunrise. Nothing beats wrapping up in a hotel robe, slippers and sipping on a hot tea. Not that any of that was needed – it was about 25’c at 6 in the morning!
Breakfast was served buffet style, with all the tables laid up outside to enjoy the morning sun. It was the perfect way to start the day – freshly baked baguettes, fresh juice and a little sunshine! Could not have asked for more.
If you’re looking for a nice hideaway to retreat to after a busy day sightseeing, complete with the perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy a unique dinner, the AVANI Avenida Liberdade is the hotel for you!
