Hotel Ikon Phuket Review – Helping Me Fall In Love With Phuket

My first ever visit to Phuket was 2 years ago and it was not a pleasant experience. I was staying in a hostel in Patong that had absolutely no atmosphere and was totally dead. It rained for 4 days straight, Patong was one of the most disgusting corners of the earth I have ever graced and to put it not-so-nicely….I really did not love Phuket. I was pretty hesitant to return to Phuket but checking into the beautiful Hotel Ikon Phuket changed everything for me.

A brand new hotel perched up on a cliff top overlooking Karon village and within walking distance (or a short scooter ride in my case!) of Karon Beach, Hotel Ikon is a breath of fresh air. I loved the modern design of the building and the way it really stands out from the backdrop of the cliff behind.

We were upgraded to a room with a sea view which was amazing and Coral, my friend I’m travelling with, and I agree it was one of the nicest hotel rooms we have ever stayed in. The aircon was unbelievably fast at cooling down the room, a feature I rate very highly when travelling in Thailand especially since the first fan-only room we stayed in caused me to faint and landed me in hospital with 4 stitches in the back of my head!

It was all the little features in the room that impressed us most, such as the hanging chandelier light or the ceiling-to-floor window that connected the bathroom to the main bedroom, allowing for better views while you shower! The bed was absolutely massive and the bad news (for us) was that it was so comfortable that it almost caused us to miss breakfast 2 nights in a row!

The breakfast, while we are on it, was delicious! Fresh pancakes and waffles, my first time coming across hot chocolate in Thailand, croissants, an array of fresh fruit and an egg station serving up just about any type of eggs you desire. We ordered a few other things from the Pool Cafe while chilling out, but I have to say I found them horribly overpriced. A plate of chips ended up costing over 200 baht – and while it said it would be served with a variety of sauces, it simply came out with some tomato ketchup which was pretty disappointing.

Right, back to the title of this post and why Hotel Ikon helped me fall in love with Phuket. Here’s the real reason to stay in this gem of  a hotel; the sunsets that can be seen from the hotel swimming pool and the balconies of the bedrooms are nothing short of SPECTACULAR. If you can force yourself to leave the cooling hotel pool and drag yourself down to the beach, you will be rewarded with even more stunning sunset photos.

Seriously guys, the sunsets were out of this world. You will never go anywhere that has better sunsets that Phuket. (But if you do, please let me in on the secret!)

Overall, Hotel Ikon Phuket is a really great choice for your stay in Karon Beach. Its far enough away from the action (and those horrible juicy bars) to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep but close enough that you can easily walk to the shops, restaurants and beach bars should you feel like being social. Be sure to make the most of their happy hour by the pool each day, they make a mean Strawberry Daiquiri!

Editors note: Thanks so much to Hotel IKON for hosting me during my stay in Phuket. While the stay was complimentary, the review is totally honest, as always. :-)
